Development Manager

Job Description


Cancer Support Community Pasadena (“CSCP”) is an international non-profit organization providing professionally led support groups, educational workshops, and healthy lifestyle classes for people facing cancer and their families.


Primary Functions/Purpose:

The Development Manager will assist the Executive Director in creating, administering and implementing the organization’s long-term development plan and with building and maintaining relationships within the funding community.  At CSCP, the Development Manager is responsible for planning, organizing and implementing the following fundraising efforts: foundation grant program, major gifts program, annual appeals, and planned giving. The Development Manager works closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors in these fundraising endeavors.


The Development Manager is also responsible for a portion of CSCP’s communications program, specifically, authoring a quarterly newsletter and an Annual Report. The Development Manager will work with marketing staff to develop communication and engagement strategies.


Along with the Executive Director, the Development Manager sets goals, monitors work, and evaluates results to ensure that CSCP’s operating requirements are met and are consistent with the mission and needs of the organization.  The Development Manager reports directly to CSCP’s Executive Director.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Grow a major gifts program including identification, cultivation and solicitation of major donors

  • Oversee all grant seeking including research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements

  • Build a planned giving program with a focus on increasing membership in CSCP’s Legacy of Hope Society

  • Oversee the annual appeal fundraising drives, including the production of direct mail pieces, coordination

      of mailings, eblasts, telephone follow up, etc

  • Make public appearances/accept speaking engagements to share information about CSCP with the community

  • Attend Board Resource Development Committee meetings

  • Maintain gift recognition program, including the stewardship of donors

  • Advise Executive Director and program staff about potential grants

  • Offer donor prospect strategy counsel to the Executive Director

  • Work collaboratively with, and in support of, volunteers and other development staff to cultivate and solicit donors

  • Meet regularly with program staff to learn about funding needs; prioritize needs with Executive Director

  • Prepare quarterly newsletter and Annual Report

  • Perform other related job duties as assigned


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Three to five years minimum experience in professional fundraising, particularly major gift fundraising

  • Strong writing, interpersonal and public speaking skills

  • Knowledge of the organization’s area of work

  • Be a “self-starter” and goal driven to initiate donor visits and fundraising calls

  • Be organized and exhibit “follow through” on tasks and goals; strong time management skills

  • Ability to understand and respond appropriately to the needs and interests of CSCP leadership and major gifts donors

  • Ability to utilize donor databases; generate reports; measure outcomes

  • Adherence to the highest ethical standards; demonstrate professional conduct; positive, can-do attitude enthusiasm for CSCP and its mission



  • Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s preferred


Work Environment: This is a full-time position. Work office location is Pasadena, CA. Telecommuting/remote work not available for this position. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and/or weekend work and some possible travel. Must be willing to communicate with donors on weekends if necessary. Valid Driver’s License required. Reliable transportation and insurance necessary. Able and willing to lift/move event related materials weighing up to 25 lbs. Full-time staff entitled to benefits offered by CSCP.
